A pair of cowdogs is well worth their keep. Steers need to know that they are expected to join the cattle drive. They get herd broke with time. But stragglers and hiders need to be made to join up and not let get away with escaping. Cowdogs sure are handy to teach them!
Is it just me or does that bull look extremely large when compared to the dogs?
Those cowdogs really looks very great. How do they train them?
We haven’t really trained these dogs. They work cattle by instinct. The black dog came from our neighbors and is McNabb- Border Collie cross. The red dog is a Border Collie rescue from the animal shelter. They work because they love to. Also they have an amazing desire to please their owners. Praise-not punishment- seems to be the way to work with them.
I do have a pup that I want to put more commands on– things like sending her way off to bring cattle. I haven’t really figured out how to do that. I am open to training tips from the pros on this.
In response to the comment about cattle vs cow dog size– the dogs are fairly small, but they don’t act like it. A 30lb cowdog thinks nothing about turning a 1500lb cow. It is amazing both because the dogs are fearless and in that the cattle repect such a smaller creature. One little dog can move a whole herd of grown cattle- and make it look easy!
